How to use the Threaders

UltraFine and All-Purpose Threaders

To thread a hand needle such as a Quilting/Betweens, Sharps, Milliners/ Straw, Beading and Embroidery/Crewel

  • Insert the threader wire loop through the needle eye.
  • Holding the needle and threader in one hand, put the thread through the wire loop with the other hand.
  • Gently pull the wire loop back through the needle eye.

Helpful Hints

  • To see the eye more clearly, hold the needle over a white background.
  • When working with very small needles or difficult threads, it may be necessary to ease the thread back through the needle eye. To do this, hold onto the wire and wiggle it a bit with an up and down rocking motion.

To thread a sewing machine needle

For threading size 60/8 through 80/12 needles, use the UltraFine Threader.

For threading size 90/14 and larger needles, use the All-Purpose Threader.

  • Turn the machine handwheel so that the needle is at its highest point.
  • Lower or remove the presser foot to create plenty of space.
  • For greater visibility and contrast, place a white card behind the needle eye.
  • If your sewing machine needle is threaded from front to back:
    • Insert the wire loop into the needle eye from the back of the needle.
    • Put the thread through the wire loop.
    • Pull the wire loop back through the needle eye.
    • If you’re threading a double or triple needle for decorative work, repeat as needed.
  • If your sewing machine needle is threaded from right to left:
    • Insert the wire loop into the needle eye from the left side of the needle.
    • Put the thread through the wire loop.
    • Pull the wire loop back through the needle eye.

Needlework Threader

To thread a hand needle with a long eye, such as a Tapestry, Chenille and Yarn DarnerĀ

  • Insert the threader wire loop through the needle eye.
  • Holding the needle and threader in one hand, put the thread, embroidery floss, yarn or decorative strand through the wire loop with the other hand.
  • Gently pull the wire loop straight back through the needle eye.

Helpful Hints

  • Always thread needles with good lighting.
  • Be sure the thread and needle sizes are compatible. If the thread is too large for the needle eye, select a larger needle.
  • If necessary, use a magnifier or readers (yes, even over your regular glasses) for better visibility.

Cutting Thread with the All-Purpose and Needlework Threaders

  • With one hand, hold the thread in place on the threader handle.
  • With the other hand, pull the thread over the cutting blade.
